Harvested 4-120 ft rows, 3 rows per bed , 3000 cloves of Garlic and strung them in groups of 10 in barn

7/18/09

Summer has finally arrived. Fields are still wet but getting better

- tiller was being fixed by Gene, so we spent a lot of time digging and weeding the rest of the 1/2 rows in lower field . We couldn't find the starts to transplant (Squash) and didn't have Rutabega seed with us, so we seeded 1-1/2 bed of purple top white Globe Turnip, 3 rows in a bed
- Everyone weeded the lower field and only weeded one bed of Tomatoes and Eggplant up above
- Folks took home Lettuce , but there's still more weeds to come out soon
- we need more help with weeding the upper field!

7/12/09 Bee Wrokshop

August 10, 2008- Workparty

jada, margot, jeff, pico, giselle, adrianne, ellie, katie, christina, carol, amanda, gail, and her daughter.

thinned carrots, weeded beets, weeded onions, weeded potatoes. potatoes need to be hilled for the first time, but ground is too wet. beets need to be thinned. carrots were thinned to 2 inches apart. onions are growing strong, but weedy. watered everything in with fish emulsion. red and green express cabbage were planted on monday.

7/20 Workparty

we decided to let a few lettuce go to seed & pull the rest to plant more beets

7/13 Workparty

Jada and Michelle went out to Rippling waters to put in worktrade hours. We weeded their chard.

7/6 Potato Planting and BBQ

attended: Matt, Cameron, Emily, Angel, Jim, Maria, Maria's mom, Amy, Ellis, Carol, Gisele, Lee, Jada, Jeff, Margot, Michelle

Potatotes: 6 rows, 150 feet in length, trenches dug 3 feet apart, potatoes cut and planted 12 inches apart, 6 inches deep

1 row of yukon, 1 row All Blue, 1/2 row island sunshine, 1/2 row banana, 1/4 row red dale, 3/4 row all red, 1/2 row magic molly, 1/2 all red

Matt brought a donation of 30 lbs of potatoes - all blues, bananas and larattes

trenches were started by running hand plow (see tool above) down the bed 3-4 times then raking the sides of the trenches up. the potatoes were placed in the trenches 12 inches apart (we used paint sticks to measure) and trenches were then filled in.

We also weeded the onion field and Gene's broccoli. Lawn was mowed.

6/22 Workparty

6/15 Workparty RAINED OUT

6/17 Christina & Michelle transplanted more cukes 6" apart and reseeded radishes (1-2 seeds) in between. This companion planting is said to help deter pests.

The radish plants already growing were covered in flea beetles. We choose to pull them out and reseed, so that we could cover both cukes and radishes
with remay to avoid more flea beetles and cuke beetles. We dug trenches on both sides of beds and buried the remay. THis has seemed to be the best method for keeping remay from blowing away, but is time-intensive to remove it and rebury it to water the plants.

6/8 Workparty

Transplanted 3 rows of tomatoes 18" apart. Concerned about the apple tree shading two rows of tomatoes. Will cut down some branches.

Started squash in cups in greenhouse.

6/1 Workparty

-finished the onions (red wings), planted a total of 2500 onions,
-planted a half row of herbs (saving the basil for interspersing with tomatoes),
-planted a row of soy and fava beans (inch a part),
-weeded lettuces,
-planted a little bit of summer squash (in hills, 1 foot apart, 3 seeds per hill, mulched around hills).

5/25 Memorial Day BBQ & Workparty

- mowed in between rows of onions and around the fields

- transplanted redwing, copra onion starts into the field
the following method seemed to work most efficiently: 1) mulch with hay 2) make holes in the mulch (4 per row, 4 inches apart) & loosen soil 3) transplant 4) water

next year: only 2 onion seeds per cell in 200 packs, cut all but one seedling in cell to strengthen plant

5/18 Work Party - Pleasant Valley Acres & Broadturn

Pleasant Valley Acres:

-cucumbers starts in the back row, covered them in remay.
-radish seeds sowed directly in between the cucumber starts.
- bush bean seeds sowed directly in the back left
- tubing and rebar used to make hoops to hold up remay; rebar cut with bolt cutters.


Broadturn Farm: Angel & Ryan
- weeded around the whole herb spiral and surrounding area
- back area of the field looks nice as the "wild" section of the garden, encourage the growth of some red clover, yeowdock, red raspberry, plantain, and dandelion which are already growing there

5/11 Workparty

Peas - the row was weeded (clover left to keep nitrogen in the soil -- a nitrogen-producing bacteria grows on their roots) the seeds were sown directly

Red Oak Lettuce -- had reseeded itself from last year in the field; the plants were separated and planted four to a row about three inches apart; added one more to each row last year because the plants didn't get as big as expected

Mesculun Mustard, Mesculun Lettuce Mix, Chard -- sown directly 3" apart, all in same row

Kale -- Winterbor, Nero di Tuscana (dinosaur), Red Russian -- row was tilled, sown directly 4" apart in two rows, covered in remay cloth to protect from flea beetles.

Some of us went on an herb walk with Angel and potted comfrey and motherwort.

May 3rd Parsnip Harvest

harvesters: Christina, Jonah, Amy and Michelle

One row of parsnips were left to winter over in the field at Pleasant Valley Acres. We cleared the hay that was insulating them. Found that loosening the dirt at least half-way down the root before pulling them out was the best way to avoid snapping them. The damaged ones were taken home to be eaten, the rest were stored in saw dust.

Jonah cut some wild cattail shoots, peeled back the green leaves to the white heart which is edible. It tastes like cucumber.

March 9, 2008- Onions

Angel, Jeff, Margot, Bella.

Started our onions at Rippling Waters in Standish.
We used 13 trays, with 200 holes per tray, 2/3 seeds per hole (will need to be thinned).
We used 2 trays, with 12 peat pots total, planting in three lines.

...for a total of appx. 2800 onion starts. We'll see about germination rates.

We did not use all of our seeds, and had plenty of each seed left over. Looks like we ordered too many Redwing and Ailsa Craig seeds, especially.
